How do you build your own Cottage?
How to build your own Cottage begins with making good decisions, and then it’s just following the steps. Here’s how:
- Select one of our designs, ranging in area from 1000 to 2000 Square Feet, which is appropriate for your region – from New England to the Gulf Coast, and the East Coast to the Mid-West. Please note that our geographical limitations are based on the availability of our specified systems; see the map by Superior Walls to see if your location is included within our regions.
- Purchase documents from us; the package includes bid and construction-quality drawings and specifications, prepared and vetted by registered architects and professional engineers.
- Hire a local structural engineer to review, Sign, and Seal the documents and assure that all regulations in your local jurisdiction are accommodated.
- Hire a local Civil Engineer to prepare a site plan for your property to locate your Cottage, and show topography, intended Storm Water Management, and well and septic locations or connections to public water and sewer.
- Find a local General Contractor who will prepare a bid to complete the project, work with you on your selections and Shop Drawing reviews, procure your Building Permit, order and stockpile materials and long lead-time items, and construct your Cottage when your materials are on-site.
Making good decisions when building your Cottage
How to build your own Cottage can be as simple as following the steps. But it’s important to remember those good decisions we mentioned. To achieve the efficient schedule we’re proposing, you’ll first need to spend time reviewing the design you’ve selected. You will need to understand the plan and all the details to make sure that they will work for you. And if you decide to make changes, make them up-front, before the panels are in production. This will help you avoid costly changes that can negatively impact both your timeline and your budget.
Not as daunting as it sounds…
Remember that these designs are based on years of experience as to what works best. We have worked hard to make our Cottages comfortable and efficient, without wasting square footage or resources. And we have specified systems and materials that we know are good quality. So, theoretically, there shouldn’t be any changes necessary, or very few anyway. When you take the time, make good decisions, and follow the steps, the system can work for you. And you’ll see how quickly your Cottage can be built, and how soon you can be in your new Home.
